Tips for Developing a Link Building Strategy – A SPN Exclusive Article

Link building should be considered phase two of any SEO campaign (on-site optimization being phase one) and is a critical component of maintaining site ranking and establishing a trust factor with the search engines.

Link building is an ongoing campaign necessary for improving a website’s inbound link stream which can help promote your brand and overall visibility in the search engines. Link building can also help boost unique visitors to your site which in turn can lead to an increase in conversions. Link building efforts come in many forms including: local profiles, blogging and blog commenting, social networking, directory submission and online publicity, among others.

The overall goal of a link building strategy is to grow links from many different, but relevant, sources over time. Most link building strategies range from 3 months to a year and should incorporate 10-20 different scheduled tasks a month. It is important to create a very specific link building schedule and stick to it as much as possible. Growing links too fast raises a red flag with the search engines and can result in negative consequences. Growing links slowly helps establish a trust with the search engines, leading to better positioning in their results.

The first step in developing a link building strategy is to conduct a link audit for your website and its top three competitors. Google Webmaster Tools can analyze your site while Link Diagnosis (both free services) can be used to analyze the competition. Conducting a link audit helps establish a baseline strategy by determining how many one-way links are already pointing towards your site. Depending on the age and size of your website, an audit could return with 100, 1,000, or even 100,000 one-way links directing traffic to various pages on your site. It isn’t necessary to visit all 100,000 links, but you should take a good sample (roughly 1000) of the listed links and visit each one to determine what kind of link it is. This is called creating a link portfolio.

The person conducting the link audit should keep an eye out for “bad” links coming from places like adult or gambling sites. Search engines keep track of how many “bad” links a website has and the greater the percentage of links coming from these sites the more poorly it reflects on the website. Again, trust is the most important thing to establish between a site and the search engines. The number of “bad” links has a negative effect on a website’s trust factor.

Analyzing a competitor’s website helps you determine if there are any good places you should be focusing your link building activities, but aren’t. It also lets you know what kind of competition there is online. If competitor X has 7,500 links, competitor Y has 12,000 and competitor Z has 23,000 one-way links, then a company with only 2,000 links knows it has a lot of work do to before it can effectively compete in the same space.

When developing a link building strategy, you need to create a schedule of diverse activities. Search engines want to see a blended approach because it demonstrates a commitment to site branding. It also lets the search engines know that your site is legitimate and employing white hat SEO techniques. These efforts can include creating social networking profiles, article marketing, and online video marketing.

The easiest place to start with link building is directory submission. You should submit your site to reputable online directories like Yahoo! Directory, Dmoz and Business.com, as well as industry specific online directories. Just double check that your website isn’t already listed in a directory before submitting a new profile. Duplicate submissions look bad to search engines as well as consumers because it shows a lack of attention to detail and can appear spammy. If a website is already listed in a directory, make sure the profile is up-to-date.

Along with online directories, you could consider becoming a member of industry associations. While it often costs to join these associations, it helps lend credibility to your site and can help position you as an industry expert. You should try to promote your website as an “authority” in your industry by placing links in online arenas that correlate to your industry/products and that will drive appropriately targeted traffic to your site. Industry associations are also a good place to develop relationships with other members.

You can help promote yourself as an industry leader by creating, and commenting on, industry blogs. Producing your own content as opposed to just re-posting work by outside sources lends credibility to your site and encourages consumer trust in the expertise of your company and you as a writer. It can also help create a conversation with customers as opposed to the one-way communication of a website. Blogs that allow for comments encourage consumer participation.

Leaving appropriate comments on other blogs (comments that actually contribute to the conversation, not just things like “Thanks for the post!” or “Great ideas!”) helps grow relevant links back to your website and promotes your company’s authority as a leader in your industry.

As you promote your website and build its authority as an industry leader, natural inbound links will develop overtime. As your company blog or white paper is discussed or cited, as your product/service is reviewed and promoted by word-of-mouth over social networking sites or as your online press releases get picked up by various news sources, your campaign will grow to include links not directly created by your website’s link building efforts.

The most important thing to remember when it comes to link building (just like most SEO efforts) is that it must happen over an extended period of time. It’s easy for website owners to get anxious and want to see immediate results and over-aggressively push link building efforts. Doing so can result in negative consequences. Link building isn’t just about boosting the number of one-way links pointing to your website; it is also about building and managing an online brand that resonates with consumers.

J’avais déjà évoqué il y a quelque temps la problématique de l’usage d’unpseudo sur internet. Concluant qu’il ne me semblait pas forcément utile de se cacher derrière un tel artifice. Il y a peu, une anecdote sur ce blog montrait les difficultés à maîtriser l’usage des médias sociaux, et son image sur ceux-ci.

Mais c’est cet article du Monde “Dis-moi qui tu suis sur Twitter, et je te dirai qui tu es” qui m’a confirmé ce que je pressentais déjà : être anonyme sur internet est non seulement peu utile, mais surtout totalement (ou presque) illusoire. Voici un extrait de l’article :

Daniel Gayo-Avello n’a rien d’un profileur. Chercheur en informatique à l’université espagnole d’Oviedo, ce trentenaire a pourtant mis au point un algorithme qui réussit à dresser à grands traits le profil d’un individu (sexe, âge, appartenance religieuse, ethnique, orientation sexuelle…) sur la simple base des personnes qu’il suit sur le site de microblogging Twitter.

“Cette expérience montre que, quelle que soit la prudence de quelqu’un sur le réseau en matière de données privées, si on connaît des informations personnelles sur ses “voisins” (en l’occurrence les personnes qu’il suit), on connaîtra forcément des informations personnelles sur lui”, résume le chercheur.

L’idée de ce chercheur est simple : si vous ne voulez pas vous dévoiler, vos amis le feront surement à votre place. Plus vous aurez d’interaction avec d’autres internautes, plus il sera facile de vous connaitre. La seule solution étant de ne divulguer aucune informationet de n’avoir aucun lien avec personne. Un mort numérique en sorte. Pour ne pas dire sociale, vu l’importance croissante d’internet dans notre quotidien.

Sachant que Google “engrange une demande accrue de renseignements sur les utilisateurs : suivi de la navigation et stockage des mots-clés, scan des mails dans Gmail, des informations livrées dans les formulaires, entre autres.” wikipedia, que Facebook a une politique de protection de la vie privée pour le moins erratique et que cette firme vient d’accorder aux développeurs d’application un libre accès à toutes vos données personnelles, y compris adresse et numéro de téléphone, il y a de quoi avoir peur.

Etre anonyme sur internet devient, peu à peu, tout bonnement impossible. Or son usage étant plus en plus incontournable, il convient d’adopter une attitude intelligente à l’écart de cet outil fabuleux. Oui, fabuleux. Car ce n’est pas l’outil en lui-même qu’il faut blâmer, mais l’utilisation qui en est faite.

L’un des grands mythes d’internet, l’anonymat, est en train de disparaître. Grâce (ou à cause?) aux réseaux sociaux, la frontière entre IRL et online s’estompe au point de ne plus exister. Que l’on déplore ou non ce changement, il faut s’y adapter. Savoir que sur internet comme dans votre quotidien (certains comme moi ne font de toute façon pas la différence), votre entourage vous connait. Ainsi que les différentes institution, l’état, les compagnies dont vous utilisez les services, les entreprises auxquelles elles auront revendu les informations vous concernant, bref, tout le monde.

OTTAWA – Les forfaits internet illimités vont bientôt disparaître pour laisser place, dès le mois de mars, à une facturation en fonction de l’utilisation de la bande passante.Les clients du fournisseur d’accès TekSavvy, qui sont nombreux à avoir opté pour une formule illimitée, ont reçu un courriel samedi qui les informait que les forfaits offerts seront plafonnés à compter du 1er mars prochain.
«À partir du 1er mars, les clients de forfaits 5Mbps en Ontario doivent s’attendre à ce que le service offert soit limité à 25 Go de données (60 Go au Québec), sensiblement moins que ce qu’était capable d’offrir TekSavvy avant la décision du Conseil de la radiodiffusion et des télécommunications canadiennes (CRTC) d’imposer une facturation en fonction de l’utilisation», pouvait-on lire dans ce courriel.
Le CRTC, qui réglemente les activités de radiodiffusion et de télécommunications au Canada, a en effet décidé le 25 janvier de garantir aux fournisseurs d’accès à internet le droit de facturer ses services au détail, moyennant un rabais de 15 %.
Les consommateurs ont vivement réagi en apprenant cela. «Qu’est-ce que vous voulez que je fasse avec 25 Go par mois, que l’on partage à deux en plus?», a demandé Samuel Pikelin, étudiant à Ottawa.
Cette décision est toute aussi inquiétante pour les entreprises, comme la société américaine Netflix, qui a récemment lancé une offre d’accès illimité aux vidéos en streaming pour 8 $ par mois.
Pour Daniel Bader, journaliste techno de Toronto et rédacteur en chef du site thecellularguru.com, la décision du CRTC de contraindre des compagnies comme TekSavvy est mal pensée.
«Il s’agit d’une décision d’austérité qui va étouffer le dynamisme du marché, affecter lourdement la productivité des entreprises canadiennes et qui va empêcher les gens de naviguer comme ils le souhaitent sur internet.», a affirmé M. Bader. «Je ne vais pas dépenser 8 $ par mois chez Netflix si je ne peux pas en profiter pleinement.»
Une pétition en ligne sur OpenMedia.ca a déjà recueilli 100 000 signatures de consommateurs qui espèrent que le CRTC reviendra sur sa décision. Plusieurs maires ont soutenu cette pétition.
La pétition fait état d’un certain nombre de préoccupations, notamment concernant l’avenir des entreprises qui offrent des services en ligne, comme le stockage de données ou les jeux en ligne.
De son côté, le CRTC a fait valoir qu’une facturation basée sur l’utilisation réelle permettrait de gérer plus efficacement le trafic internet et la bande passante et éviterait que le service fournit aux petits utilisateurs soit affecté par les échanges de données massifs des plus gros utilisateurs, qui téléchargent des données en permanence sur internet.
TekSavvy a demandé à ses clients de se battre pour que les choses changent. «Comme nos clients, et tous les internautes canadiens, nous sommes très déçus par cette décision du CRTC. Nous poursuivons nos efforts pour nous opposer à l’imposition de frais de bande passante exorbitants en fonction de l’usage de chacun.»

Cet article semble répondre à plusieurs questions que je me pose aux sujet de tout ces nouveaux outils internet. Comme chaque fois je vais essayer de l'appliquer dans mon travail quotidien. Les premiers pas

Bon c'est aujourd'hui que je me décide enfin à utiliser cet outil, le blog, dans ça vrais fonction.

Jusqu'à présent je m'en suis servi plutôt afin de bâtir un peu plus rapidement des pages web. J'ai une bonne connaissance des codes HTML et du Java pour avoir suivi l'évolution du web. J'ai conçu différentes pages web personnelles et commerciales au fil des années.

Je commence donc un exploration moins technique, mais plus approfondie des possibilités du contenu. N'est-ce pas plutôt la vraie raison de l'existence du WEB.
